Clayton Saunders – The Magic of Her Smile

The Magic of Her Smile came about after I heard the beautiful old song The Shadow of Your smile recently being played on the radio. I remember hearing this song for the first time back in the 60’s when I was living in India.

As with most pop/jazz songs in those days like Satin Doll and The Girl From Ipanema, I included it in my repertoire as I performed around the traps in Calcutta. This time around The Shadow of Your Smile struck a real chord with me so I took the bones of the song and crafted it into The Magic Of Her Smile.

This song is about a special moment in time and then after the bridge it becomes a memory that is carried far into the future. The story is about a guy who sees this girl at Australia’s world famous Port Douglas four mile beach and is captivated by her smile. Even though he later finds out from the barman that she’s on her honeymoon, he can’t seem to get her smile out of his head. Hence the girls smile becomes etched in his mind and he’s bound to remember that magic smile for the rest of his life.
