Chris Staff – The Road He Took
With the 20th anniversary of Bazza’s passing I thought it would be a great idea to release this song.
I first met Barry Thornton back in the 1990’s in a town called Casino NSW. Barry had already retired from touring with Slim Dusty by this stage. He was known as Bazza or Baz to those who knew him.
Barry loved helping young kids who were starting to learn, play and perform music.
I played a lot of instrumental guitar pieces, anything from the Shadows, Barry Thornton, Tommy Emmanuel etc. Baz taught me how to melodise by playing around chords, keeping it tidy and easy. As kids we all jumped up on stage with Baz.
The 2 main statements he shared with me were:
1. Doesn’t matter what style you play, just play it with feeling.
2. When I was 13 he said “Look after those fingers son”.
