Ronnie & Johnny – Ready To Go

Ronnie started writing poems as a teenager and continued during her student nursing days and early married life.

This song came from one of those poems inspired by a combination of characters nursed by Ronnie in different settings over the years. This includes the old Lowson House at RBH and the now Greenslopes Hospital which was a war veterans’ hospital. In fact, Ronnie’s father had been hospitalised there during WW11, and Ronnie worked there after having her children. In those days the vets were taken to see specialists in town in a commonwealth car, and this was a real event.

Ronnie had a lot to do with old returned soldiers throughout her life in the course of her work and through the many family members involved in the armed forces.

This song is a tribute to them.

Ronnie & Johhny – The Last Track

Ronnie wrote the poem this song comes from in 1983 on the death of her mother’s brother, Bass. It was really written for her mother and now many years later morphed into this song.

Bass had a rough and tumble life on the farm, then joined up in ‘39 as the 106th man in Queensland to enlist for WW II.

He had given Ronnie a pony when she was twelve as she was horse mad and there was plenty of room on the farm and there were always other horses there. She learned to ride, the hard way, and was a frequent visitor to Bass’s house.

Ronnie nursed him as a student nurse at RBH during his first heart attack. Sadly, some years later he suffered a stroke which left him very debilitated and he later succumbed to a second one.

Ronnie & Johnny – Where’s the Baby?

Ronnie grew up on a chicken farm on the outskirts of Brisbane, the youngest of 11 siblings. She always had an affinity with the farm and household animals and was always around them.
This day, she took it into her head to go on an adventure on her stick horse, which really was just a stick! None of your flash hobby horses on the farm! As usual, she was accompanied by an animal. The alarm was raised when no one could find her and no one knew where she had gone.
They searched unsuccessfully and Ronnie was eventually brought home by some strangers in a car, a rarity in the district.
The song retells this story which would freak out parents today. Luckily, there was a happy ending.
